Cherryvalley Village, East Belfast

Cherryvalley village is suburb situated in the East of Belfast City, Northern Ireland. The area became famous when the late Jimmy Young created a character in his show called the 'Cherryvalley Lady' and the whole of the country had a laugh at the expense of what was then the ruling classes.

The rural look of the area has long since gone, as have a lot of the old grand houses such as Rosebank (100 Kings Road), Enderley and Glenaltans and those that have survived are under threat from modern day property developers.

Cherryvalley like many other Belfast villages has now been swallowed up in the growth of the city. The Cherryvalley area is now served by two council areas, Belfast and Castlereagh, as well as two main shopping areas, one on the Gilnahirk Road and the other called the Kings Road shopping centre, which was built in the 1960's.

The ambience of Cherryvalley exists to this day, despite the look of the area having changed over time and the loss of small rural businesses. The area's look has substantially changed since the closure of the railway line and since the main mode of transport moved away from the horse and cart to cars.

However Cherryvalley remains a very sough after place to live and has now become protective about its diminishing heritage, after considerable loss due to both a road widening scheme on the Kings Road and destruction caused by development.

Why not learn more on the Cherryvalley and the old Knock Village areas by buying Aidan Campbell's latest book called 'Cherryvalley', which is now available from Hillmount Nurseries..
