Industry regulator Ian Osborne recommends NI Water makes cuts of £135m, savings of 11% through measures such as efficiencies. Last month NI Water said it would spend another £1.5bn upgrading water and sewage systems over the next eight years. It also said it was currently spending up to £150m on infrastructure every year.

Chris Mellor chairman of Northern Ireland Water indicated during a Stormont committee briefing on Wednesday the 14th January 2009, that it could take years for Northern Ireland Water to improve its data quality.

Northern Ireland Water has been fined £5000 at Lisburn Magistrates Court for polluting the Glenavy River in October 2007.

Northern Ireland water enters its sixth month without a permanent Chief Executive after the former CEO Katherine Bryan resigned. However NI Water has now started to widely advertise this vacancy at the very top of it organisational tree. It is not yet known whether Acting CEO Chris Mellor will apply for the post.

The Northern Ireland Executive has announced (20th Nov) that the proposed Water Charges will be deferred for another year.

Another fiasco at Northern Ireland Water as 5,800 customers are overcharged about £1 million, leading to repayments and the company facing a multi-million pound shortfall in its finances. The director of customer services for NI Water William Duddy, indicated that the problem is due, in part, to errors in billing for business customers and confirmed that thousands of businesses were wrongly charged. Mr. Duddy failed to indicate whether any Northern Ireland Water Directors would be falling on their sword, in this latest blunder.

An Audit Office report has at branded the Northern Ireland Water Service as the worst road offender. The Northern Ireland Water Service was responsible for over 20,000 out of 35,000 road openings last year. However, NI Water was the worst at returning roads to their original state, leaving residents with poor repairs and unacceptable roads (view BBC Story) ...so who is responsible and who will be held to account, who knows!!!

The Minister responsible for Water Charges Conor Murphy is proposing a maximum charge of £775 next year raising to £950 the year after. It was also disclosed that approximately 70,000 pensioners will be given the option of installing a meter.

Katherine Bryan is gone and it only cost us £266,217.65 in a payout to her. She left because of perceived incompetence in her own organisation and left us to foot the bill. Ms Bryan may have gone but to people about to pay the price of her department's errors she won't be forgotten.
3. Looking around the websites of our local politicians, a question comes to mind, are our local politicians worried and have they good cause to be? For example the DUP site indicates that they have always been completely opposed to Water Charging yet it is they and the SF government who are introducing it. Will the electorate hold all the main parties responsible for introducing this tax?

The Chief Executive of Northern Ireland Water Katherine Bryan has decided to jump ship, she announced that she is leaving the company at the end of May 2008. This should coincide with the publication of a report into how NI Water got their figures so wrong.
